Bipolar disorder is the disease which describes a set of condition of mood swing, the severe variety of which is named as manic depression’. Bipolar disorder is a serious brain disorder that is characterized by extreme mood shifts, functioning and energy. It is manifested by episodes of two main attributes, i.e. mania and depression. These symptoms last from days to months. The disease usually starts in late adolescence, but can occur to anyone at any age. Nevertheless, genetics do not always envisage who will develop this bipolar disorder. It is a chronic and generally long lasting condition, requiring lifetime treatment. Approximately 2.3 million Americans are affected by this disorder.
- A genetic component is strongly believed to be related to this disorder. People with a family history of mania or depression are likely to be affected from bipolar disorder or have at least higher risk of developing it.
